Polar Bear Blog – October 26, 2010 – Churchill, Manitoba – Wind, Rain and Dancer Again

Polar Bears of Churchill - Polar Bear Blog from Churchill, Manitoba, Canada

After a brief reprieve, the wind, rain and snow looks to be returning. Gusts of up to seventy kilometres an hour are predicted and with an east wind this morning, it should get ugly. Nothing good comes from an east wind here, unless you like fog, clouds, rain and sleet – which combined with a woodstove, cabin, coffee and baileys are actually not all that bad. Combined with dogsledding outside all day, well… Folks are … Continue reading

Polar Bear Blog – October 24, 2010 – Churchill, Manitoba – Tipi Parties and Polar Bear Prints

Polar Bears of Churchill - Polar Bear Blog from Churchill, Manitoba, Canada

With the winds finally calmed and temperatures still moderate, it was as good a night as any for a bonfire and a few drinks at the tipi at Wapusk Adventures. Of course, as soon as we lit the fire, all the sparks from the dead spruce needles arced perfectly and directly onto the tipi. Luckily, the tipi turned out to be fire-resistant and did not burn to the ground. The full moon peaked from behind … Continue reading

Polar Bear Blog – October 21, 2010 – Churchill, Manitoba – Northwest Prevails

Polar Bears of Churchill - Polar Bear Blog from Churchill, Manitoba, Canada

Its been more than a week of northwest winds now and they have just changed tomorrow’s forecast (as often happens) to more winds, gusting 40-60km/hr. These winds are cooling down the bay (in a way) and should make for a faster freeze-up. Even with temperatures hovering around zero, the ponds are starting to freeze. A drop of five degrees celsius would really hasten freeze-up for the bears but as we know, things often changed up … Continue reading

Polar Bear Blog – October 20, 2010 – Churchill, Manitoba – Bear Stories

Polar Bears of Churchill - Polar Bear Blog from Churchill, Manitoba, Canada

Kickin’ around the dogyard waiting for the planes to deliver a couple polar bear tour groups, Nomads I think, over a hundred people, its a busy afternoon. The northwest winds are still going strong, this has been a long windy stretch even for Churchill. As happens occasionally, the planes are running a bit late. So, we are cleaning up a bit, moving the bombardier track vehicle, planting fireweed, eating Gypsy sandwich number 9,837… pretty random … Continue reading

Polar Bear Blog – October 18, 2010 – Churchill, Manitoba – Lots of Waves as Tourists and Bears Trickle In

Polar Bears of Churchill - Polar Bear Blog from Churchill, Manitoba, Canada

Groups are starting to arrive in Churchill in a bit more numbers as are bears, probably around five or six out in buggyland. I’ve heard a few reports of nine or ten out there but then again, there is an old trick to just drive around enough until everyone is confused and show them a couple of the same bears from different angles. And it really isn’t that difficult to confuse tourists, no offence…! Snowing … Continue reading

Polar Bear Blog – October 16, 2010 – Churchill, Manitoba – Runnin’ Back to Camp Nanuq

Tour groups are still trickling into town and it was a slow day at Wapusk Adventures (call it the calm before the storm) so today was as good as any to visit my old cabin. Maybe to see if there is anything left of it too. Camp Nanuq is a ‘cottage subdivision’ about 20km (15 miles) east of Churchill, towards the Cape Churchill Wildlife Management Area (always rumoured to be turned into a provincial park…) … Continue reading

Polar Bear Blog – October 13, 2010 – Churchill, Manitoba – Silver Foxes and Snow Buntings

Polar Bears of Churchill - Polar Bear Blog from Churchill, Manitoba, Canada

First wildlife of the season today, a silver fox looks to be hanging around the Navy Base and L5 – pretty much roaming between the airport and town. A silver fox is one of three phases of the red fox and probably is this year’s kit, now out on his own. There are a couple decent denning sites near town, one behind the Navy Base and one across the road from it, sandwiched between Akludlik … Continue reading

Polar Bear Blog – October 12, 2010 – Churchill, Manitoba – The More Things Change…

…the more they stay disastrously the same. It doesn’t take long to catch up on Churchill news/gossip, wanted and unwanted, eagerly or reluctantly, the news more catches up with you than vice versa. And the biggest news in town these days is the new garbage dump. Ugh. Its been six years since I first wrote an article about the proposed Churchill recycling centre and waste transfer station. It might even still be floating around in … Continue reading
