Polar Bear Blog – One More for the Road…

Well, the reason I have kept coming back for all these years is that bears never cease to amaze. While we watched the mass exodus three days ago, I did see some fresh tracks in the snow today and some signs of a late, late wave of bears.

A really good friend of mine was out in buggyland today and here is her report ‘we counted 14 really easy sightings, two came up and spent time around our machine. 2 big big males, a small male that only came up to the top of the tire went he stood 5.5 ft maybe going into his 3rd winter, one adult unaccompanied female we were wondering if maybe that was mom he kept smelling her tracks and then following at a long distance, one young female and three subadult males. Those were the ones that came close enough to ID. I expected nothing and (Great White Bear) was prepared to refund everyone but it was a great day. There were bear dots walking on the horizon but we didn’t count those.’

That’s not bad at all!!! While its great to know that many bears left on the ice, it is kind of amazing to think that there was another wave waiting or maybe some of those bears came back. Pretty cool and pretty unexpected! Kind of a best-case scenario for the bears and the tourists.

Still, the ice is packed in and we are on the last days here. After the last north wind and a calm day, conditions look really good for the bears here. Maybe we are blessed with some late season bears because they came ashore so far south or maybe that last wave is out there because a south wind blew out the ice. I love it!
