Polar Bear Blog – Fred Bruemmer’s The Arctic
Fairly often, I find myself picking up one of Fred Bruemmer’s books and scanning through them again, even though I have read all of them over and over and over. Bruemmer was one of the first modern arctic explorers, environmentalists and writers, travelling the arctic in the 1960s and 1970s as well as one of the first polar bear photographers at Cape Churchill. An amazing life and an amazing writer. His work also puts some … Continue reading

Polar Bear Blog – State of the Western Hudson Bay Polar Bears
Well, its International Polar Bear Day whatever that means… there’s some NGOs promoting eco-solutions and that’s good, personally I prefer the ‘Stink For The Bears’ campaign that asks everyone not to shower (I’m way ahead of the curve on that one!) Its also ‘Pink T-Shirt’ day as in Anti-Bullying Day which is a worthy cause as well. Anyway, for International Polar Bear Day… I thought I would do a little ‘State of the Polar Bears … Continue reading

Polar Bear Blog – Confessions of a Buggy Driver Pt.2
Approximately eight minutes after my introduction to Churchill, Tundra Buggy Ken asked if I could work that day. Ken appeared as this ageless white-haired guy in a Tundra Buggy fleece. He had a nicely trimmed mustache, drank a lot of coffee and liked to gossip. He also had this crazy dry delivery where you could never tell if he was serious or if he was teasing you or really what was going on. So, naturally, … Continue reading

Polar Bear Blog – Killer: the Story of a Bear
Well, usually I stick with written email replies with journalists but I made en exception this week with Margaret Wente of the Globe and Mail. Her article came out today and, well, in the media, things get condensed and sometimes the message gets a little garbled. Anyway, it was a pretty good skype chat about Churchill and bears, Zac Unger, Derocher and all that cast of characters. But, my entire point was that if things … Continue reading

Polar Bear Blog – Confessions of a Buggy Driver Pt.1
I hadn’t really heard of or thought that much about Churchill when I got a job there. A friend of mine was working in Churchill at the time and I was in the Rockies – broke between rafting and dogsled season. She was the one who suggested ‘Tundra Buggy Driver’ as an occupation, so that and the fact that I kind of wanted to sleep with her was good enough reason for me. Things were … Continue reading
Polar Bear Blog – The Complicated World of CITES
We are entering the final stretch of the battle to list the polar bear among one of the world’s most endangered species. The polar bear was ‘upgraded’ to threatened in 2008. Based on, the justification that ‘a suspected population reduction of >30% within three generations (45 years) due to decline in area of occupancy, extent of occurrence and habitat quality.’ The United States has again (they first tried in 2010) put forward a motion to … Continue reading

Polar Bear Myths: The Goose and The Egg
So, the hypothesis involving polar bears feeding on goose eggs is once again in the news and being used by both sides to discredit the other. A recent post at the Polar Bears International website ‘dispelling’ polar bear myths has led me to write a bit of a backgrounder and actually prove this myth ‘busted or not’. Myth: Polar bears will supplement their diet with goose eggs. TRUE. Polar bears have and always will be … Continue reading

Polar Bear Alley – Churchill’s Bears and Hudson Bay Winter
Well, enough polar bear politics for a while… hard to get away from that stuff though. Let’s try and figure out what the bears are up to out on the ice. Temperatures have finally levelled off, it is even up around -15C today which is literally t-shirt weather, really – assuming, of course, that you have a merino wool underlayer. However, until now, Churchill has been locked in a deep freeze since pretty much the … Continue reading
