Polar Bear Blog – The Polar Bear Attack

Sparring polar bears along Hudson Bay

This post is actually about the polar bear incident out at Cape Churchill… back in 1983 – an attack that accidentally launched the polar bear industry… The Treul Story ”Here, take my camera, I have to get a bear off my arm.” Well, that’s what they say he said anyway and Fred Treul did have a pretty big camera, a clunky Hasselblad. And there was a bear on his arm, latched on to his tricep. … Continue reading

Polar Bear Blog – Moose Bits and Wolverines

Lots of folks are out moose hunting now, either north of Churchill around North River delta, south near Twin Lakes or up the hydro line. Hunting season, of course, means gut pile season too and that’s pretty good or wildlife watchers (in a way, ha). Today, we watched a couple arctic foxes and a red fox hanging around a carcass just inland from the cabin. All three had totally different levels of tolerance to our … Continue reading

Polar Bear Blog – After Bear Season

Things settle into a bit of hibernation mode up here once the bears and tourists leave. There is enough sea ice on the bay now to make for crystal clear days and pastel sunrises and, of course, the itchy dry skin that comes with winter. It is minus thirty today, the woodstove and coffee are just roiling to life. The cabin is ‘almost’ clean for the first time in forty days. The ‘lake’ road, our … Continue reading

Polar Bear Blog – An Open Letter to Manitoba

At the end of this season, I found myself on a full-on out-of-my-mind rant to two people that should and, essentially, are on the same side of the environmental spectrum as I am. While I would never take it back, I did start wondering why I feel such a sense of rage and despair when it comes to the current state of Churchill’s polar bears. So, I have penned an open letter hopefully stating Churchill’s … Continue reading

Polar Bear Blog – Bears Everywhere

So, yesterday morning, we opened the door to a young male bear running towards us. It was quite the surprise, a crazy morning. This one is a lot more like a ‘bear season’ morning – there was a bear sleeping across the lake, stretching once in a while and kind of laying low, out of the main action of bear season. There was one that came through here around 3am last night, passing by, half-checking … Continue reading

Polar Bear Blog – Churchill Bear Incident

There was a serious bear incident this morning in Churchill and I have kind of noticed that the news reports have changed a bit through the day, so here is the Churchill version as best as we can figure it out. There were two individuals walking home around 5am when a young male polar bear came after them. The bear caught one of them near Bill Ayotte’s house and, in turn, he came out and … Continue reading

Polar Bear Blog – Bear Season Notes

Bird Cove Bear

A few bears are starting to move. We had three bears at Bird Cove today, including one male who kind of waffled between overly curious and duly cautious; pretty neat to watch his learning curve around the vehicle. The first pass he just walked by with a few sideways glances, the second time he came up and investigated the 4×4 and by the end of the day, he just hunkered in the willows and ignored … Continue reading

Polar Bear Blog – Gettin’ Busy

Dancer-2013

Gettin’ busy might be the wrong words, September sounds like it was already pretty eventful in terms of bears. Sounds like there have already been 17 bears handled and placed in jail this year. One bear was flown out just this week but soon replaced by another ‘break-in bear’ from Goose Creek. A bunch of cabins have been hit this year over in the other cabin subdivision, most recently my buddy Greg’s place. The bear … Continue reading
