Tours and Tour Operators in Churchill, Manitoba
The typical visit to Churchill during polar bear season includes two days on the tundra buggies, a dogsled tour, helicopter tour and town & area bus tour. Other attractions often included in the itineraries are a visit to Parks Canada Visitor Centre and the Eskimo Museum.
If you are travelling to Churchill for bear season and are not a seasoned independent traveller, I would strongly recommend booking with one of the main tour providers. They offer charter air service and pretty much take care of everything. However, if you want a little adventure, book a trip up on the train stay for about a week – you will need to meet some locals in the first couple days or you will get a little bored – and explore Churchill. I would recommend a trip to the Royal Canadian Legion around five pm.
In the summer, visitors usually join the whale watching/Prince of Wales Fort boat tour and then add another day of sea kayaking or snorkelling with the beluga whales. Summer itineraries usually include a town & area bus tour, a walk-about town and sometimes a half-day trip on a tundra buggy. Walking tours of the west peninsula of the Churchill River are now being offered and are highly recommended.
It is a lot easier to travel to Churchill independently in the summer. Call ahead to book a snorkelling adventure or zodiac but other than that, I would still just show up and see what happens. But that’s me.
