Polar Bear Blog – Polar Bears, Northern Lights and the Usual

Polar Bear on Sea Ice

Temperatures have gone back to normal in Churchill, hovering between -25C and -30C, not too shabby especially if there is no wind. The Churchill Rangers headed out on their patrol exercise this past week in some pretty frigid temperatures – but that’s what being a ranger is all about when you come to think of it. Northern lights are not quite what everyone was hoping for this winter. We are supposed to be in a … Continue reading

Polar Bear on Sea Ice

Well, that was a bit of a pause… but this bear season ended up being a lot busier than I thought and more fun too. Things are still looking a little grim for Churchill’s bears but at least the temperatures are starting to drop and the north winds have finally arrived. There are tons of bears around right now – 20-30 out in buggyland, another 15-20 between town and Camp Nanuq… Polar Bear Alert is … Continue reading

Polar Bear Blog – Bears and A Quick Flight North

The north winds have arrived a couple days ago and stuck around for a bit, making it at least feel like bear season now (even if it feels more like the beginning than the beginning of the end). This afternoon, the wind dropped off and the sun came out, giving the bears a bit of an incentive to move around. There was sparring along the coast, bears walking towards town (catching its scent from 15 … Continue reading

Polar Bear Blog – Getting a Little Nervous

Well, the predicted cool wave never showed up. Daily highs are still just above freezing, meaning there is more snow-rain-snow that just snow or even ice. The bay is still open, even the scattered ice in the Churchill River has washed out. This is definitely a warmer than usual bear season – getting some really nice skies with the clouds moving in and out though. There are a decent amount of bears scattered along the … Continue reading

Polar Bear Blog – Bear Season 2011 Preview

October is here and time to start blogging again… There have been a few miserably cold days so far but not too many, shaping up to be an average start to ‘bear season’. Freezing at night, hovering aroundd five or six degrees Celsius during the day. There is usually a bit of a lull in bear movement right now. There is always a bit of a pause before things really pick up. In about a … Continue reading

Polar Bear Blog – Churchill, Manitoba – Perigee, Pies and Polar Bears

Minus thirty this morning, clear and cold – a perfect Churchill day. The town is busy (as busy as it gets) with AuroraFest, Churchill’s little community celebration. There are snow sculptures being made – some big, some small – in the park and in front of the complex. A pie in the face even is planned for noon and an Elder’s tea at the Legion after that. The town is also business as usual. The … Continue reading

Polar Bear Blog – Churchill, Manitoba – Northern Bison, Northern Lights, North Winds

Another year of Exercise Northern Bison just wrapped up in Arviat, Nunavut. Following last year’s military exercises near Dymond Lake, a larger expedition was planned for this february. Starting on February 17, over 250 troops along with a small contingent of Canadian Rangers headed north on a two-week snowmobile trip from Churchill to Arviat. Nunalla trading post, the halfway point between Churchill and Arviat, was set up as an operations base. While the bootleggers that … Continue reading
