Polar Bear Blog – It’s Been a Blast

We are just digging our way out of a good Churchill blizzard. Winds gusted up to about 70km per hour yesterday and it was pretty much whiteout conditions for most of the day. Still we went out looking for bears which meant mostly getting stuck in snowdrifts and breaking through lakes, which are still surprising soft around the edges. I would have thought that my ice driveway would have been in by now. Over the … Continue reading

Polar Bear Blog – Bears Everywhere

So, yesterday morning, we opened the door to a young male bear running towards us. It was quite the surprise, a crazy morning. This one is a lot more like a ‘bear season’ morning – there was a bear sleeping across the lake, stretching once in a while and kind of laying low, out of the main action of bear season. There was one that came through here around 3am last night, passing by, half-checking … Continue reading

Polar Bear Blog – Black Bears, Orphaned Cubs and Heat Waves

Ol' Dancer

Well, where to begin… After a fairly chilly start to the season, we have had a couple days of plus weather, softening up the ground a bit even if it is not fully melting the snow cover. Even this heat wave, seems like its a weak early – the accompanying south winds have blown the shore ice out into the bay where it will lurk until the next blast comes from the north. It sure … Continue reading

Polar Bear Blog – Bear Season Notes

Bird Cove Bear

A few bears are starting to move. We had three bears at Bird Cove today, including one male who kind of waffled between overly curious and duly cautious; pretty neat to watch his learning curve around the vehicle. The first pass he just walked by with a few sideways glances, the second time he came up and investigated the 4×4 and by the end of the day, he just hunkered in the willows and ignored … Continue reading

Polar Bear Blog – Polar Bear Capitals of the World

Hudson Bay Railway Bear

Well, this may indeed by the ‘time of the most polar bear’ after all. Polar Bear Alert has been very busy in Churchill this year with over 120 calls and 24 polar bears cycled through the jail already. Eleven bears are being held right now. Admittedly, Polar Bear Alert officers are a fair bit more ‘proactive’ these days but still, that’s a lot of activity. The snow is very good these days for tracking polar … Continue reading

Polar Bear Blog – Gettin’ Busy

Dancer-2013

Gettin’ busy might be the wrong words, September sounds like it was already pretty eventful in terms of bears. Sounds like there have already been 17 bears handled and placed in jail this year. One bear was flown out just this week but soon replaced by another ‘break-in bear’ from Goose Creek. A bunch of cabins have been hit this year over in the other cabin subdivision, most recently my buddy Greg’s place. The bear … Continue reading

Polar Bear Blog – Camp Nanuq Morning

couch-lake

It seems like I haven’t blogged from Camp Nanuq forever (actually just last bear season, I guess…). Camp Nanuq is a little cabin area, twenty kilometres east of Churchill. There are three lakes out here (ponds anywhere else) and a mottled mix of colourful cabins and krummholz trees. Skeletons of fireweed and three-toothed saxifrage flutter in the north wind this morning. The willows sway and weave. After a four year truce, have reached eight to … Continue reading

Polar Bear Blog – Countdown Begins

Summer-male-fat

October 20th – one month until the ice forms… prime polar bear season is upon us. There is a nice blanket of snow on the tundra here and daily highs are still right at freezing, really nice temperatures for more bears to start coming in and moving around. Evening lows drop down around -5C and windchill hovers around -10C… great woodcutting weather, maybe even good for some last minute year cleaning and such. Between the … Continue reading
