Polar Bear Blog – Polar Bears and Ice Scars
The ice looks to be fairly good this year across much of the arctic and most reports are of a late spring (there was just a blizzard in Churchill yesterday…) so that’s more good news for the bears. There is a nice ‘floe edge’ near Churchill right now, some pictures of seals basking in the sun are floating around. At this time for year, seals both will haul out on the ice to warm up … Continue reading
Polar Bear Blog – Fox Versus Fox
Prime seal hunting season is just beginning out on Hudson Bay. The seal birthing season is likely underway and polar bears are likely now heading over to where the fast ice meets the sea ice. Throughout the spring, an assortment of scavengers follow the seal hunt as well. Adult polar bears tend to only eat the fat of young seals, essentially peeling them like bananas and scooping out the best parts. This leaves most of … Continue reading
Polar Bear Blog – We Learned Something About Bears!
Another new polar bear/sea ice study is out and this one is actually pretty good. Like, I actually learned something from reading it. I mean this study is actually about bears!!! Here is a link to the paper – it comes from the University of Alberta, authored by Seth Cherry with Derocher, Thiemann and Lunn. It takes an in-depth look at just when females bears (the only ones they can follow with radio collars) come … Continue reading

Polar Bear Blog – What’s Up in Bear Country
Mothers and cubs season seems to be coming to a close. The last tour group is in there right now, just waiting for word to see how the season ends up. Weather seems to have held, temperatures are actually heading up to the -10/-15C range, about five degrees above normal. Word from the west arctic actually seems pretty good too. Hunters in Tuktoyaktuk mentioned that they are seeing more tracks of mothers and cubs than … Continue reading

Polar Bear Blog – Hudson Bay Quest
The Hudson Bay Quest starts today in Gillam, Manitoba. There are fifteen teams heading 200 miles north, first following the Hydro cut line and crossing the barrenlands before splitting off onto the Deer River and finally into Churchill. The race has changed a bit from when it first started, back in 2004. It ran from Churchill up to Arviat, Nunavut then and was a mix of Churchill and Inuit teams. That first year was pretty … Continue reading
Polar Bear Blog – Frozen Planet
Well, we are just entering the most critical time of year for polar bears. Many cubs have emerged from the dens and seal hunting season is just beginning. We should have some pics from of new cubs soon but our friend from Watchee Lodge took 11,000 pictures so… it might take a while to sort through them. Judging from the spike in my site visits, it also appears that its arctic documentary season, I think … Continue reading

Polar Bear Blog – Breakup on Hudson Bay
Its fun with charts day! Along with almost everyone else, I have been a bit confused by the numbers being thrown around and stuff about breakup on Hudson Bay. After reading the latest research (Gagnon and Gough (2005), Scott and Marshall (2009), Stirling and Parkinson (2006), I figured I would just look at the Canadian Ice Service charts myself. I picked the first week of July because that kind of gives the best idea as … Continue reading

Polar Bear Blog – The Great Bear
An Inuit legend as retold in arctic explorer Knud Rasmussen’s 1921 journals… A woman ran away from her home because her child had died. On her way she came to a house. In the passageway, there lay skins of bears. And she went in. And now it was revealed that the people who lived in there were bears in human form. Yet for all that, she stayed with them. One big bear used to go … Continue reading
