Polar Bear Blog – Willie Stroker, Junior and the Bear Season Blahs
Well, my guests and film crew are gone for the season and so, seemingly are the bears. I did hear that there was one at Cape Merry today and one in town last night, could still a week or so of a few bears coming and going from the ice by Eskimo Point. Anyway, the season is over for me and I have a bit of the bear season blahs tonight. After such a short … Continue reading
Polar Bear Blog – Frozen!
This whole season has been about a week ahead of last year so it is not a real surprise that the bay froze about a week earlier than last year. Yesterday, we watched the mass exodus of polar bears out onto the sea ice. Most of the day consisted of yellow bear butts wobbling and weaving out towards the floe edge. Over the past week, there have been daily highs around minus 10-15C and some … Continue reading
Polar Bear Blog – Cabin Life
After watching Parks Canada and Polar Bear Alert authoritatively chase bears around Cape Merry this morning, the Japanese film crew headed out to Spruce Ridge to get some footage of polar bear defences and maybe gather a few stories. Spruce Ridge is kind of the sister to Camp Nanuq ‘cottage subdivision’ except instead of a collection of shacks around a couple lakes, its more of a collection of shacks along a gravel ridge with a … Continue reading

Polar Bear Blog – Halloween Blizzard and Polar Bear Traps
After a brief elation that there would finally be a real Churchill blizzard for Halloween, our film crew started realizing that the amount of trick-or-treaters actually trick-or-treating is kind of directly related to the amount of blowing snow really blowing. As in, we had a genuine Churchill blizzard but the streets were pretty barren!!! But, as usual, things tend to start on Churchill time around here. As the sun started setting, the costumed kids showed … Continue reading
Polar Bear Blog – Foxes, Cubs and Ice
Beautiful cold and sunny day up here. They say with the windchill its -19C but it sure feels nice out to me. The animals seem to like it too. This morning, we tracked down a couple red foxes, one was a cross/silver fox while the other was a true red. Both were very accommodating, maybe return visitors to Edgar’s Land of Wonder at L5 or maybe its just that natural fox curiosity. Either way, it … Continue reading
Polar Bear Blog – Bears Are Moving
Third day of north winds and only a puddle of open water remains on our lake. If this keeps up, the lakes should be thick enough for bears to walk on by tomorrow. I wouldn’t be surprised if the southern edge of these ponds are already being tested out by a few bears. Frozen lakes are a sure sign that the peak season wave of polar bears are headed for Churchill. Its kind of like … Continue reading
Polar Bear Blog – Polar Bear Alert Program
What is Polar Bear Alert? Basically, Polar Bear Alert is a patrol of Churchill and the surrounding areas for polar bears. Usually, they do two patrols a day, checking the road system and about 8-10 polar bear traps laid out around the community. A polar bear ‘trap’ is a giant culvert on a truck trailer. This culvert is baited with a rag dipped in seal oil, once the bear crawls in a giant steel door … Continue reading
Polar Bear Blog – The First Wave
Polar bears and Polar Bear Alert officers are getting a head-start on the season. The pre-season wave of polar bears is coming through after a bit of a September lull. This week, conservation officers were spotted darting an errant bear along the coast this week complete with helicopter assist to keep the bear from retreating to the ocean and possibly drowning. Once tranquilized it was airlifted out of the area. Reports of bear bangers are … Continue reading
