Polar Bear Blog – Open Water in Churchill
Well, I am back from a quick trip to Churchill and the cabin and non-blogging – for some reason, I stopped blogging while I was actually IN Churchill… oh well. Either way, spring has arrived along Hudson Bay with swans and geese swarming Churchill last week. Pacific Loons have settled back into the lake at Camp Nanuq and even White-crowned Sparrows, Bonapartes Gulls and Long-tailed Ducks are picking their spots. Male Ptarmigan were in pitched … Continue reading

Polar Bear Blog – Spring Seals, Wolves and Rangers
Its hunting time in the arctic. Leads, temporary cracks in the ice, have opened up and there are some nice floe edges around – where the ice meets the open ocean. Bears, seals and everything gather around these areas, its a ‘busy’ place. And, of course, out here you find seals giving birth in snow dens and polar bears looking for seals giving birth in snow dens. It is a bit of a mixed bag … Continue reading

Polar Bear Blog – Confessions of a Buggy Driver Pt.1
I hadn’t really heard of or thought that much about Churchill when I got a job there. A friend of mine was working in Churchill at the time and I was in the Rockies – broke between rafting and dogsled season. She was the one who suggested ‘Tundra Buggy Driver’ as an occupation, so that and the fact that I kind of wanted to sleep with her was good enough reason for me. Things were … Continue reading
Polar Bear Blog – The Complicated World of CITES
We are entering the final stretch of the battle to list the polar bear among one of the world’s most endangered species. The polar bear was ‘upgraded’ to threatened in 2008. Based on, the justification that ‘a suspected population reduction of >30% within three generations (45 years) due to decline in area of occupancy, extent of occurrence and habitat quality.’ The United States has again (they first tried in 2010) put forward a motion to … Continue reading

Polar Bear Myths: The Goose and The Egg
So, the hypothesis involving polar bears feeding on goose eggs is once again in the news and being used by both sides to discredit the other. A recent post at the Polar Bears International website ‘dispelling’ polar bear myths has led me to write a bit of a backgrounder and actually prove this myth ‘busted or not’. Myth: Polar bears will supplement their diet with goose eggs. TRUE. Polar bears have and always will be … Continue reading

Polar Bear Blog – Ice bears and a Little Family
Well, it is peak bear season right now so another good day to be in Buggyland with Churchill Wild’s Dymond Lake group. These folks had a nice mix of experience, walking with bears for a few days and enjoying lodge life then coming out and having a spectacular day on a tundra buggy. Check out the Ice Bear Adventure at Dymond Lake Lodge… it’s worth it. By First Tower, about an hour drive from the … Continue reading
Polar Bear Blog – Sunny and Buggy Day
The ice was pushed into shore in buggyland today. At low tide this morning, there were at least eight bears out on the ice hoping to find a stranded seal or simply just enjoying the feel of napping on sea ice again. The bay between Gordon Point and Great White Bear Camp is almost frozen over, a thin line of blue slips in from the bay but even that will be erased with the next … Continue reading
Polar Bear Blog – Churchill Blizzard Take Two
Blizzard day today, at least at ground level… Woke up to buckets of snow sweeping over the roof and the wind rattling the north wall of the cabin. If my chainsaw worked and I actually had firewood, this would be the start of a very comfortable cabin day but my chainsaw doesn’t work and my Japanese film crew gets up pretty early. Once the northwind gathers steam, it does not take long for the ice … Continue reading
