SURVIVAL GUIDE FOR THE CHURCHILL TOURIST

Book Early...Everybody loves polar bears and Churchill is the polar bear capital of the world.  Try to book at least six months of more in advance...

Don't give up...Last minute hotel bookings are an option...sort of.  Local business owners are more than willing to give the second effort to accommodate visitors. (Bring cash...)

Visit in the summer... Beluga whales are incredible!  Summer tourism has a nice leisurely pace. Polar bear season...gets a little hectic. (Not to mention, that most of our summer tourists now see a polar bear or two!!)

Keep Your Options Open...Book a group tour in 'bear season', come on your own in the summer for whales or mid-winter to see Northern Lights.  Independent travel is still an option to view polar bears, but tour companies comprise the bulk of the hotel room and tundra buggy bookings in the fall.  Can be done on your own, but start early early early!

Bear Season is Bear Season...Don't expect any deals or discounts in Churchill's peak season (October 15-November 15). In fact, expect to stay in two or three different hotels if you are booking a little late. Bed & Breakfasts might be a good option for independent travellers.

Polar Bear Alley is a real place but not this place. It is a strip of white sand beach along the coast of Hudson Bay near the former site of the Churchill garbage dump. A beautiful place for a picnic if you know how to handle a shotgun.

This version of Polar Bear Alley is created by Kelsey Eliasson in Churchill, Manitoba, Canada - specifically at Camp Nanuq -a 'cottage suburb' twenty kilometres (15 miles) east of Churchill. I run a tour company called Polar Bear Alley Expeditions and write a few books, including the Polar Bears of Churchill guidebook, when not chasing polar bears off my porch.
