Polar Bear Alley Guides

Local Guides, Local Knowledge, Local Gossip!

Snotsicles and allPolar Bear Alley Expeditions is owned and operated by Kelsey Eliasson, a tour guide and author, living 20 kilometres east of Churchill, Manitoba, Canada. That's me!

I first moved to Churchill in 1999 to work as a tundra buggy driver for Tundra Buggy Tours. A second more important objective was because my friend, Carmen Spiech, was living and working in Churchill at the time and I was, ahem, hoping to possibly be more than friends... She was after all the one that called me and told me to come up to Churchill! So to make a long story short, eight years later, Carmen is the other primary tour guide/naturalist with Polar Bear Alley Expeditions.

Together, we are both educated in wilderness first aid and Parks Canada trained in safe travel in polar bear country. Carmen is a former Parks Canada park officer and I am a former Parks Canada heritage interpreter. In fact, I prepared the latest version of the Parks Canada Heritage Interpeter manual (of course, if you find any mistakes in there, call them, not me...)

Kelsey and CarmenWe both enjoy working and living in the Churchill area and have found that it is one of the most abundant and exciting areas in Canada for wildife and plant life. At the edge of the treeline and the beginning of the arctic, there is an extraordinary amount of boreal and arctic species of plants and animals. Carmen is an expert botanist while natural and human history are my strengths.

Living in Churchill, we have the advantage of watching the seasons change, understanding the nuances that each year brings and keeping up-to-date tabs on local gossip -true or not! This means that our clients get a unique, personal and unforgettable glimpse of the real Churchill, Manitoba...

We have chosen to focus on small groups to allow greater interaction with each participant and make long-standing relationships with our clients - in fact, we just got back from a party in New York with one of last year's groups!

Polar Bear Alley Expeditions also works closely with Northern Soul Wilderness Adventures based in Winnipeg. Owned by Dave Pancoe, Northern Soul focuses on canoeing adventures in Manitoba's wildlands. Dave is a former tundra buggy driver as well and offers canoe trips of the Deer River to Churchil, Manitoba. He is available for Winnipeg-based canoe trips and tours to our clients travelling through the city.

Polar Bear Alley is a real place but not this place. It is a strip of white sand beach, cranberry red seaweed and sunshine yellow sea-lyme grass along the coast of Hudson Bay. A beautiful place for a picnic if you know how to handle a shotgun.

This version of Polar Bear Alley is created by Kelsey Eliasson in Churchill, Manitoba, Canada - specifically at Camp Nanuq -a 'cottage suburb' twenty kilometres (15 miles) east of Churchill. I run a tour company called Polar Bear Alley Expeditions and write a few books, including the Polar Bears of Churchill guidebook, when not chasing polar bears off my porch.
