Polar Bear Alley: Polar Bears of Churchill

Return to Polar Bear Alley

Cinnamon Bear

Another one of my favourites, this bear hung out at White Whale Lodge, showing up at the window whenever the smell of Andy's freshmade cinnamon buns filled the kitchen. He wouldn't do much, just stand and watch and wait. Wait for us to throw a cinnamon bun or tourist to him but we never did. We just huddled against the opposite wall of the kitchen.

White Whale Lodge burnt down in 2003. It was quite a loss. It had variably been a trading post, brothel, a home and eventually an eco-lodge. Boats had been built there when people thrived on the Churchill River and it had been a part of the rebuilding of Prince of Wales Fort. It was a pretty special place and a nice break from the hectic pace of Churchill's 'bear season'. Working over there was great and I have a lot of good memories of Joe and Andy even if we were speaking in 'bushman' gibberish by week five of isolation.

Those were good cinnamon buns.
